Tierra

A public art installation that makes the Central Valley's invisible air quality crisis impossible to ignore. The Central Valley is home to 4 million people and some of the worst air quality in the United States. Agricultural burning, vehicle emissions, and geography trap pollutants in a basin with no escape. The communities most affected; majority Latino, low-income, agricultural workers, have the least access to real-time air quality data and the fewest resources to respond to it. Tierra is a series of public sculptures designed for Central Valley communities. Each sculpture monitors local PM2.5, PM10, ozone, and CO2 levels in real time and communicates air quality through ambient light, warm gold when the air is clean, amber when moderate, deep red when dangerous. No app required, no data literacy required. The color tells you instantly whether it's safe to let your kids play outside today. The companion app gives students, parents, and community advocates deeper data, historical trends, school day alerts, and a shareable weekly air quality report designed to support community advocacy efforts.
